The Princess and the Frog..

Disney will be releasing it's first black American princess movie, The Princess and the Frog sometime later this year. The film is loosely based off the book The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker and presented by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the jazz age, Princess Tiana will Disney's first black princess and her voice will be provided by Tony award winning Anika Noni Rose. Other voices to be featured in the film will be those of Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard, John Goodman and others.

A first for Disney, I think this is far overdue but still a tremendous event for the brand. We've seen the usual Disney princesses, mostly of european descent and even those of asian, middle eastern, native american with the likes of Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas. I think it is a great thing that little kids of African-American descent now have a princess they can relate and look up to. It will take diversity in the world and bring it to the big screen on a level that the younger generation can better grasp.
