Milton Glaser....

Known as the embodiment of American graphic design of his century Milton Glaser was admired by many. Born on June 26, 1929 Glaser was educated at the High School of Music and Art, The Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy. In 1954 became founder, and president, of Push Pin Studios. While at Push Pin Studios, Glaser introduced a contemporary design vocabulary, with a wide range of work that included record sleeves, books, posters, logos, font design and magazine formats.

For twenty years Glaser and Seymour Chwast, directed the organization Push Pin Studios. It served as a powerful influence on the direction of the world of graphic design. Push Pin is a memorable exhibition at the Louvres Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. This company will always be essential to the community of Graphic Design.

Glaser also founded New York Magazine with colleague Clay Felker in 1968. His work is characterized as “direct, simple and original, his work ranged from “ancient to avant garde.” At New York Magazine he was President and design director until 1977. Glaser has designed and illustrated more than 300 posters in career including his Bob Dylan poster for CBS records. He has also written numerous articles on graphic design and co-authored, with the late Jerome Snyder, the best-selling Underground Gourmet, a guide to inexpensive restaurants in New York

Milton Glaser Inc was founded in 1974. His career was based on the creations of posters and prints. He has been featured in worldwide exhibits, shows at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and Museum of Art in New York. He is a graphic and architectural designer best known for his I Love New York logo. This logo was used for the New York State department of commerce; it became the most frequently

imitated logo design in human history.

In 1983 Glaser founded another company called WBMG, with partner Walter Bernard. It was a studio dedicated to magazine and newspaper design work. Since its commencement they have designed more than 50 magazines, newspapers and periodicals around the world: among them “la Vanguardia in Barcelona, o Globo in Rio De Janeiro, l’espresso in Rome the Washington Post, money, the French the nati
on, Paris match, l´express, esquire, Jardin des modes, and business Tokyo in Japan.”

From the beginning of his career, Milton Glaser has been an active member of both the design and education communities. He taught design at the School of Visual Arts in New York in one of America’s most respected programs. Glaser serves as an influential icon in the world of design and has been rewarded for his works. In 2004 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Design Museum.

Within the School of Visual Arts, Glaser has his own archives. Titled the Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives, this division is dedicated to preserving and making works easily accessible. It allows works of significant artistic, cultural, and historical value by designers, illustrators, and art directors all who have close ties to the School of Visual Arts. This site serves as a resource for students, designers, and researchers. Milton Glaser is a present design consultant to “Stony Brook University, Lands’ End Direct Merchants, Schlumberger Ltd., Bruegger’s Bagels and a number of other businesses.”

Articles on Mr. Glaser have appeared in Time, Newsweek and major publications throughout the world. In 1975 he was awarded the rare distinction of having one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. He was represented at the Biennale di Venezia during the same period.

Mr. Glaser has also been awarded with The Philadelphia Museum Medal, The Art Directors Club Gold Medal, The Society of Illustrators Gold Medal, The St. Gaudens Medal for outstanding accomplishment from The Cooper Union, and the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medalist Award. He is also the recipient of four honorary doctorate degrees.

Mr. Glaser designed a Child craft Store in New York. His largest work to date is a 600 ft. mural for the New Federal Office Building which is in Indianapolis. He has designed for several publications including the Village Voice, New York Magazine, Circus, More, New West, Pal Match, Cue, L'Express and Esquire Magazine. Among all of this Glaser is also responsible for the graphic design and the decorative programs for the restaurants at the World Trade Center as well as the Observation Deck at the same location.

A state-of-the-art volume on his work, Milton Glaser: Graphic Design, was published by the Overlook Press in five international editions, and a book of his posters was released by Crown Publishing.

Mr. Glaser's as a graphic designer has paved the way for design and illustration to become intelligent and serve causes that can have a social impact. Mr. Glaser created 'Epigram' for Botanist, a series of playful furniture pieces that are both classic and innovative. Mr. Glaser has taken the term “conversation piece” to a new level, these are the only furniture pieces ever created by the designer which is a part of Botanist. Botanist is a collective effort from renowned designers to bring awareness to causes that they are zealous about. The pieces designed by Mr. Glaser will be donated to the charity of his choice. He has chosen for his proceeds to benefit the International Rescue Committee.

As we can see Milton Glaser is a historic part of graphic design history. He has brought the “I love New York” Logo which will go down in history and is using his talents for great causes. Glaser has worked nonstop for over forty-five years and it is well noted. Milton Glaser now lives in New York City with his wife, Shirley.

“It’s certainly an aspiration. Work is not simply functional. Whatever it is that makes art worth looking at doesn’t come out of your intention, but from what you are.”----Milton Glaser.

Born in Sweden in 1929, Claes Oldenburg is known as one of the great American Pop artists and creator of sculptures and monuments, Karen Rosenberg writes. The two exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, “Claes Oldenburg: Early Sculpture, Drawings, and Happenings Films” and “Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen: The Music Room,” lean heavily on the museum’s sizable collection of works by Oldenburg and Van Bruggen."The radicalism of Mr. Oldenburg’s sculpture, real and imagined, has a lot to do with context and scale."

Oldenburg's work definitely was one to catch my attention as a I was reading the New York Times. His pieces were so interesting to see things we normally see every day made into such large pieces and overly exaggerated is always interesting.

John Lennon ExHibiTion...

John Lennon: The New York City Years,” an exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC in SoHo, provides a glimpse of years the artist lived in the city, from 1971 until his death in 1980.Most of the exhibition belongs to Yoko Ono, and draws on material she has lent to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s main museum in Cleveland and to the John Lennon Museum in Tokyo."The show offers a collection of lyric sheets and production notes that, if you look closely at Lennon’s changes, additions and annotations, tell a lot about his working methods and his ways of thinking about music."

I wasn't around to enjoy John Lennon's music but i do know that he is a legend which is why I decided to do this post. I think it is important to pay tribute to those who have helped paved the way for others. His music is a part of history so I think this tribute was well needed and should be checked out if your in to music.

What is aN OuT fiT w/o an AccessorY

"Accessories are no longer an afterthought — they’re the main attraction, as shoppers look for inventive ways to make their archived wardrobe look fresh and modern. But what’s the best way to mix and match without looking cluttered or silly? Four designers put the pieces together to convey their visions for the season and infuse old classics with new drama."---Ellen Tien

This brings me back the post I did on the Lego wear everywhere. It goes to show how important accessories have become to an outfit. Now a days an outfits not complete if you don't have the right accessories. You need those earrings, belts, pins, bags, glasses, and s much more. I am an accessory queen i always have to add more to my outfit its the way to go.

AfricaN FasHion & ArTs...

At the end of April, the nonprofit group Festival for African Fashion and Arts held the Fashion for Peace show inside the Nairobi National Park in Kenya. The show featured designers from Kenya, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania. The first Fashion for Peace show was held last year in response to the violence during the elections in Kenya. In 2008, more than 1,000 Kenyans were killed and hundreds of thousands driven from their homes in the aftermath of the vote. African access to the Western fashion world remains limited. "You will rarely have an African designer have the opportunity to show his or her talent internationally,"

As I continue to blog i begin to see the affect that Africa really does have on theworld. I am glad to see it making a difference though the arts. whether it be through the UN, Bantu, or fashion shows all of this is for a better cause in Africa. I love that the rich culture can stretch so far from its origin.

The TwiTTeR GuyS...

“NO one knows what we look like,” said Biz Stone, a 35-year-old college dropout who’s dressed like a high-school student, in a shapeless black T-shirt, jeans and high tops, and is one of the three co-founders of Twitter. “So no one treats us like celebrities.” Evan Williams, 37, is also co-founder of Twitter. Twitter is now the public’s latest fascination. Mr. Stone and Mr. Williams made Time magazine’s new list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

I think that this is great and can show what a little imagination can do. These guys are regular guys who we probably come across everyday and wont know they are the founders of something a lot of use every day. Twitter is now the new facebook so lets allows these guys to enjoy this while it lasts.

Cutt offs maKinG a Come Bac...

It seems that finding a perfect pair of cutoffs is rare thing which is why people are beginning to create them themselves. Everyone wants to give their cutt off the distressed and faded look just enough in just the right places. You could purchase the perfect pair, like Current/Elliott’s rolled, stretch-denim cutoffs, for $187. But then you'd be the one who paid $187 for shorts that look more fit for cleaning. Style.com thinks paying $187 for those shorts is "nuts," too. Also, the ideal pair of cutoffs is not bought, but salvaged from ugly old jeans you no longer wear. This was the big trend in bottoms last summer and unbelievably in the ever changing world of fashion has managed to stick around for another year.

I love cutt off jeans I buy them and o have created my own. Its best tcreate your own because you can do with it what you please, you can give it a boyfriend look or a vintage look and all you need is a good pair of scissors.

Donatella No Longer an Internet Virgin...

Over a year ago Donatella Versace told a reporter "I don't do the Internet but I can do it through my team." She didn't see the sense of doing it herself so would allow her team to do it. She's come a long way in fourteen months, evidenced by her first-ever blog post on the Huffington Post this morning about her experience at Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner. We can now welcome Donatella! to the blogging world. She begins, "This is my first ever blog, so forgive me if I make any 'blogosphere faux pas." Donatella, whose spring 2009 men's collection was inspired by "the type of man Barack Obama represents," noticed those in attendance at this dinner weren't glued to their Blackberry's — a "pet hate" of hers. "Its obvious to me that this is a President people want to listen to because what he says is interesting".

It is great to see older designers trying to get to know the Internet. I think it is important for them to get to know it and leave up to their "team" as Donatella once did. What happens if one day the team is not their this is the Internet generation so it is a must to know something about the internet to I congratulate her on breaking her blogging virginity.

GossiP GirL VisiTs da 80's...

In a flashback scene on tonight's episode of Gossip Girl they visited the eighties. "Settling into a strong-shouldered jacket, tiered dress and electric pink Givenchy heels." This is also a mini-preview of the Gossip Girl spinoff about young Lily and Rufus. We already know that Gossip girl is known for its great sense of style. It is a show that is complemented for it great sense of style. When they decided to have the flash back series i was all to excited to see how it would portrayed in 2009. I was impressed by their influence on the fashions of 009 and how it played a role in the scenes. Yes it was an eighties flashback and it was all about that eras style but everything they wore in the episode is something that we wear now, they hipped it up for or generation. So it was interesting to see how the eighties influenced us and how influence how the eighties used to look.

Window Shopping...

"Almost every category of advertising is declining precipitously in this economy, but there is one that is thriving." This would be the blossoming storefront advertisement category. As fast as storefronts can become vacant, they can just as fast be replaced by ads. First thought of as the poor mans way of advertising it is now becoming the smart mans way.

Advertisements for Intel have capitalized on the bankruptcies of stores like the Disney Store and elsewhere, barren storefronts have been replaced by ads for such companies as Nestea, Snickers and Delta Airlines.

All you have to do is walk out
the door for lunch and notice the number of vacant storefronts — and they tend to be in prime areas, in major thoroughfares, and they’re unused space — so why not get in there and put a message in there?” said Peter Sherman, the managing director of BBDO West, San Francisco, part of the Omnicom Group."

In the economy today, with the recession and all I find this form of advertising to be a very bRiGht idea! Not only advertises and showcases the product but it cuts costs as well. It ultimately gets the job DONE!

RecycLe FoR FasHioN...

Making clothes out of unusual materials is what Compai is all about. Asked by Terracycle and Capri- Sun to refashion a dress out of caprison juice pouches for a fashion show this was right in their alley. It took a couple of weeks to put the dress together it took them four times to get the zipper on and 80 broken needles before they had their final dress made. This dress is now on auction on eBay the proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of America.

This dress looks so fragile but is well worth the broken needles. Compai is known for using recyclable objects to create fashion. I know of a young lady who created her dress out of juice pouches for her prob dress and it was a huge success, she ended up setting trends in her high school and community.

LeGo WEar....

Lego wear is now everywhere. The toy we once s played with and used as a building tool is now a fashion statement. The new iconic retro brands possess strong currency right now. It hails not from the annals of fashion or apparel but from the world of toys. LEGO, the multi-colored building bricks that we all grew up with is still one of the top children’s toy brands. It is spontaneously transpiring into a credible street brand, adopted by Gen Y hipsters. It’s part of a bigger trend, which has seen other iconic mostly 80s brands such as Reebok. It is now used by Marc Jacob who used them on his S/S 2008 runway show.

This new accessory to fashion is one that I know too well. As a child of fashion i have been up to date with the Lego wear. It comes in different shapes and be put anywhere just like the phase wi
th the buttons. Its another accessory I love and will definitely be caught wearing.

The story of Suno is the kind that makes brings joy to many. Designer Max Osterweis, whose day job is as a screenwriter and film director in San Francisco, has been collecting traditional East African textiles for over a decade. His objective to bring work to local factories in the struggling Nairobi, Kenya, has commissioned about a thousand pieces to factories that specialize in hotel uniforms.

“Ultimately I’d like to have a full collection, if we can give people jobs and raise the skill level there,” Osterweis says.

The name of the collection is Suno which is available at Opening Ceremony. They range from about $100 to $600, determined in part by the rarity of the print.

What I love about Suno is its rare print. I love designers that bring a rare design to the plate, original designs that you can only find in one place. I love it when fashion designers bring there originality to the world with the hope of making the world a new place. Osterweis plan to help people Kenya and increase the job level and uses there rare prints is a GREAT idea.

MaDe in AfricA...Bantu Beach Wear

“The Bantu concept is one which recognizes that the consumers have the ability to make a difference in Africa. Bantu gives (Africans) an opportunity to work hard and provide the world with something extremely hot.”

“Our mission at Bantu is to introduce and make accessible beach and resort wear, accessories and skincare products with an African influence to more of the world.”

“Bantu maintains a high degree of social responsibility, while satisfying customer needs. All production is done in-house, guaranteeing the ethical treatment of our employees.”

I love Bantu swim wear it like no other you have ever seen. I wish its price range was a little more affordable but if you have the money it is well worth spending. It colors are so rich and the prints are original. If you walk on the beach with this Bantu swim wear you will be guaranteed to turn heads.

Top 5 Traffic YeiLDinG SociaL NetworKs....

1. StumbleUpon

The Pros… if you have ‘Stumble This’ plug-in on your posts or FireFox toolbar, stumbling is easy to do. It’s also one of the few link networks that do well with fashion.
The Cons… risk of getting shut down.

2. Blog Lovin’

The Pros… Prettier than Google Reader, nice to use, and low maintenance.
The Cons… if you subscribe to a lot of blogs (like I do) then it’s going to be a real bitch to move them over to BlogLovin’.

3. Twitter

The Pros… It’s fun, it’s quick and easy. Just like using instant messenger.
The Cons… Twitter takes a lot of work to be successful.

4. Facebook

The Pros…. Everyone is on Facebook these days.
The Cons… It can take a lot of work to figure out how to set up a Facebook Fan page.

5. Lookbook.nu

The Pros… for a what you're wearing site, the user-interface is quite easy, posting a look takes a few minutes.
The Cons… it’s very ageist

I've only been on two of these sites Twitter and facebook which I think are great sources to be on. I plan to check the rest out and blog on what i think of it. But I have heard good things on these site so it wouldn't hurt to check it out!

The Princess and the Frog..

Disney will be releasing it's first black American princess movie, The Princess and the Frog sometime later this year. The film is loosely based off the book The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker and presented by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the jazz age, Princess Tiana will Disney's first black princess and her voice will be provided by Tony award winning Anika Noni Rose. Other voices to be featured in the film will be those of Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard, John Goodman and others.

A first for Disney, I think this is far overdue but still a tremendous event for the brand. We've seen the usual Disney princesses, mostly of european descent and even those of asian, middle eastern, native american with the likes of Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas. I think it is a great thing that little kids of African-American descent now have a princess they can relate and look up to. It will take diversity in the world and bring it to the big screen on a level that the younger generation can better grasp.

6 Do's & Dont's of OnLine NetworKinG...

Online networking has become a new phase that is beneficial to most. It has become so easy to connect with other bloggers and ones that share your interests. Networking online may be fun but it is important to treat your profile as a marketing tool and have some professionalism to it.

Here are some helpful Do's and Donts to online networking

Don’t - Set too many different profiles that you don’t have the time to keep them all up to date.

Do - Keep your goals for being on the site and keep focus on your networking to achieve those goals.

Don’t - Turn your bio into an essay. Keep it short and sweet and get your point across who you are, what you do, why your on the site, how you can help the person reading your profile and how you can be contacted.

Do - Be an active member of the networking sites you sign up to.This all helps to get your name out there and builds your profile and in turn your blog.

Don’t - Use a cute name for your profile to try and use your real name or blog name so people associate your work with you.

Do - Keep your profile positive.

I think this article is def one to read. If your into the whole bogging generation which you should be because that's where the world is now you should know how to network. All of these tips can help you become a successful online networker. I think this is essential to any blogger and should be taken very seriously. Don't forget to have fun and keep it professional which to me is the most important rule in this post.

Lindsay as MariLyn?!?!..

Lindsay Lohan will soon be hitting the newsstands with her Marilyn Monroe tribute for Spanish Vogue . The Actress has readapted one of the Icons photo shoot ironically with the same photographer, Bert Stern. In the photos, dons a strinking resemblance to Ms. Monroe, wearing a blonde wig, big black sunglasses and a plump, pouty lip.

She is often likened to the superstar for her public ups and downs and erratic behavior. Usually in the news for negative reasons, its good to see Lohan doing something that is positive.  I think she is the perfect person to do the tribute and looks great in ALL of the photos.

Microsoft's Windows 7 to be Released...

Microsoft has revealed that the Windows 7 program will be released just in time for the holidays. Although its official release isn't too far away, engineers have also disclosed that work on Microsoft's latest program is far from complete. With this being said, Microsoft has generated the "Windows 7 Game Plan." This course of action includes making the program available for download as a release candidate and transitioning it into release-to-manufacturing mode all before becoming available for customer purchase.

Microsoft is spending these last few months and therefore time in between to look for serious flaws and fix any compatibility issues that may exist. This "Game Plan" is very much needed to ensure that all remaining kinks and creases are ironed out. It would look really bad on Microsoft's behalf if all problems are not fixed before its actual release date. I think that if there's as many issues suspected with this new Windows 7 program, then the release date should be pushed back until early 2010. No sense rushing something that will only cause greater headaches. Time and Patience is ALL it takes.

Not You Average BaLL...

The Costume Institute held its annual MET Costume Ball at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City last week Monday. This years exhibition, “Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion” focused on the importance of the model to fashion. The event brought out the likes of ALL types of celebrities from Rihanna to Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger. Some of the well known fashion designers whose lines were represented that night included, Marc Jacobs, Versace, Karl Lagerfeld and many more.

This years gala garnered many exceptional looks of art. Long Gowns, Big and very structured Jackets, in deep and bright colors were like moving works of art. The Spring 2009 exhibition is arguably the best show of fashion to date.

I like the idea of celebrating fashion and all of the people who work so hard to make it a major staple in everyday popular life. I think recognizing the models who wear the clothes oh so well was well needed. There would be no way to sell the beautiful creations without the beautiful people to wear them.

BLue iS In!!!

This season designers have been favoring a new shade of color. Shades of blue seems to be the new color for this spring. In the Aquascutum's spring 2009 collection it favored almost all shades of blue, from a soft baby blue to a sophisticated navy. With purple in close to the blue family it is another color that will have a lot of blue in it this season, you will be seeing a lot of blues and purples together. When these colors mix they create what is being called "periwinkle blue". Blue is color that is works well with most colors and can be both formal an informal.

Back in my April post I wrote a blog about the colors of the 2009 season. I didn't mention anything about the specifics of the color blue. it is good to see that some are getting more specifics with their color choice. Designers such as Valentino and Gucci are two that are in favor of the color for the season. I love the color blue and purple and i look great in it! so I'm glad to see this color more!

CreaTe Mickey Mouse EaRs For A CauSe...

Mickey Mouse is having a whole new set of ears from some of the top designers to date. Celebrating Disneyland Resort Paris’s year long ‘Mickey’s Magical Party’ My Mickey Ears project has been created, which sees top famous and fashion designer faces creating Mickey Mouse ears. Vanessa Paradis, Isabella Rossellini, Giles Deacon, House of Holland, Luella, Estelle, PPQ, Brix Smith-Start and Daisy Lowe are just a few of the ear creators. The designer ears are currently being auctioned and are going to be available for one month. You can buy a pair on buyoncegivetwice.co.uk, and all the proceeds go to Great Ormand Street Hospital Children’s Charity to help redevelop this incredible hospital.

This idea is one of the cutest I have come across. It such a cute idea and to see fashion designers come together for a cause is always great. I like the idea that they were having fun while they were doing this for a cause. Everyone loves Mickey Mouse so the idea is one that was creative and a good way to make money for a cause. I hope that at the auction they make money for the Children's Hospital. If you can go out and support this cause!!!

VaLenTino to BecomE a CosTumE DesiGner...

With the new love for theatrics fashion designer Valentino is looking to create costumes for the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert. Since Valentino is a retired designer this news to do costume is a shocking one. It is said that Valentino will be creating costumes for the 2010 concert which is a tradition on Austria and will be seen by fifty countries. The concert is held in the Austrian city every year on the morning of Jan. 1.
The idea that fashion designers are reaching into costume design is a good thing in my opinion. I like the idea that they are going above beyond what they are accustomed to doing. I hope that it is a good result for Valentino especially since he has retired. I look forward to seeing his creations in 2010!
